POLICE COMMEMORATES INTERNATIONAL YOUTH DAY 2026, TO LAUNCH NATIONAL CAMPAIGN AGAINST POLITICAL AND DIGITAL THUGGERY IN OYO

The Oyo State Police Command joins the rest of the world in commemorating International Youth Day 2026, with a series of activities aimed at strengthening Police–Youth relations, creating awareness on security issues affecting young people, and promoting their active participation in building peaceful and safer communities.
The 2026 International Youth Day is being commemorated under the United Nations theme: “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations.” The theme recognises the diverse experiences and circumstances of young people while highlighting their shared aspirations for peace, security, inclusion, opportunity and a better future.
In line with the vision and directive of the Inspector General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, psc(+), NPM, the Command has organised activities that provide opportunities for interaction with young people, encourage responsible citizenship and strengthen collaboration in crime prevention and community safety.
The activities will commence on Friday, 21st August 2026, with a Police Walkathon involving officers and personnel of the Command.
The Walkathon is primarily aimed at creating public awareness about International Youth Day and highlighting the importance of stronger Police–Youth partnerships in addressing security challenges and promoting peaceful communities.
The programme will culminate on Saturday, 22nd August 2026, at 10:00 a.m. prompt, at the Usman Alkali Baba Conference Hall, Oyo State Police Command Headquarters, Eleyele, Ibadan.
A major highlight will be the launch of the National Campaign Against Political and Digital Thuggery, aimed at sensitising young people against political violence and the misuse of digital platforms for incitement, harassment, cyberbullying, misinformation, disinformation and other harmful activities.
The launch will be followed by a Police–Youth Dialogue, which will provide a platform for frank and constructive interaction between the Police and young people on issues relating to security, responsible digital citizenship, crime prevention, peaceful participation in democratic processes and mutual trust.

The dialogue will also seek practical and collaborative approaches to emerging security challenges affecting youths and the wider society.
The Commissioner of Police, Oyo State Command, CP Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, psc, mnips, calls on youths, parents, traditional and community leaders, civil society organisations, security stakeholders and other members of the public to support and participate in the activities.

The Commissioner notes that while young people may come from different backgrounds and face different realities, their shared aspirations for peace, security and a prosperous future provide a strong foundation for partnership with the Police and other stakeholders.

The Oyo State Police Command therefore reaffirms its commitment to meaningful engagement with young people and urges them to reject violence, political thuggery, digital abuse and other forms of criminality, while embracing their role as responsible citizens and positive agents of change.
