OYO STATE POLICE COMMAND INAUGURATES VIOLENT CRIME RESPONSE UNIT, OVERSIGHT COMMITTEE
The Oyo State Police Command earlier today formally inaugurated the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) alongside its Oversight Committee in a significant move aimed at strengthening the security architecture and enhancing rapid response to violent crimes across the state.
The event, which attracted critical stakeholders from various sectors, featured the formal inauguration of the Oversight Committee established to ensure professionalism, accountability, and community participation in the activities of the unit. Members of the committee include representatives of the Students’ Union Government (SUG), the National Human Rights Commission, the Babaloja’s Association, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), as well as representatives of traditional rulers within the state.
In further demonstration of the operational readiness and tactical capability of the newly established unit, the event also featured simulations of hostage rescue operations conducted by officers of the VCRU, highlighting the Command’s resolve to tackle violent crimes and other emerging security threats within the state.
Speaking at the occasion, the Executive Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering commitment to supporting security agencies in ensuring the safety of lives and property across the state.
In line with this commitment, the Governor donated five operational vehicles to the unit and charged officers of the VCRU to work assiduously towards improving the security situation in Oyo State.
While emphasizing the importance of synergy among security stakeholders, Governor Makinde described the recent abduction of school children in the state as unacceptable and tasked the unit, alongside other security agencies, to intensify efforts towards ensuring the safe rescue and return of the victims.
He further appreciated the Inspector-General of Police for the initiative establishing the unit and commended the Command for its sustained efforts in maintaining peace and security within the state.
Responding, the Commissioner of Police, Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbemiga, expressed profound appreciation to the Governor for his continuous support to the Command, particularly in the area of logistics and operational capacity building.
The Commissioner of Police noted that the donation of the operational vehicles — the first of its kind for the VCRU anywhere in the federation — would significantly enhance the operational efficiency, mobility, and response capability of the unit in combating violent crimes across Oyo State.
He further reassured residents of the Command’s unwavering commitment to proactive policing, intelligence-led operations, and strategic partnerships geared towards ensuring a safer and more secure Oyo State for all.
